So that my words do not overshadow my memory
On the night of my first visit to Ōkuma and Futaba towns in Fukushima Prefecture, a local guide took me to a surfing spot next to the Hirono Thermal Power Station. When I rolled down the car window, I could hear the sound of the power plant in operation. I was told that the electricity I use in Tokyo comes from this very place.
While listening back to the recording, I noticed myself repeatedly asking the guide, “Is it running 24 hours a day?” “Is it running 24 hours a day?” Though I seemed to be listening, I wasn’t truly hearing… unable to process my own emotions. This work became a personal documentary, recording the process of various realizations.
The Hirono Power Station was damaged during the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and temporarily shut down all units, but it was later restored and resumed operation. However, due to aging, Units 1, 3, and 4 were decommissioned in 2023, and currently only Units 2, 5, and 6 remain in operation.
In the audio of the footage, the conversations between the artist and the guide have been cut, leaving those sections silent. The piece is composed of one-take recorded on an audio recorder, interspersed with spontaneously captured video using an iPhone 15 Pro. Initially, these recordings were made not for the purpose of creating a work, but as a personal record.
